Sahara Student Trips to Merzouga

Golden dunes, a night under the stars and a first-hand lesson in how people live with the desert. For many students, this is the moment they remember most.

Erg Chebbi: Morocco's great sand sea

The dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to around 150 metres above the surrounding plain near Merzouga. Groups arrive in the late afternoon, head into the dunes by camel or 4x4, watch the sunset and spend the night in a desert camp with dinner and traditional music.

More than a photo opportunity

The desert is a powerful setting for learning about dune formation, water scarcity, oasis agriculture, trans-Saharan trade and the Gnawa musical tradition with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Sunrise walks and stargazing round off the experience.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do we need to reach the Sahara?

From Marrakech or Fes, plan at least four days for a round trip or one-way route that includes a night in Merzouga. Five or more days makes the driving more comfortable.

Do students have to ride camels?

No. A 4x4 transfer to camp is an alternative for anyone who prefers it. We work with local teams who care for their animals and keep camel treks short.

What is the desert camp like?

Camps range from simple to more comfortable, with shared or private tents. The level of camp is included in your proposal and affects the price.

Is it cold at night?

Often, yes — especially from November to March. Students should bring a warm layer and a hat.
