Sahara Desert Trip Guide for Student Groups
Getting there, sleeping at a camp, camel or 4x4, weather and what to pack for a night in Erg Chebbi.
Where student groups go
Most student Sahara trips head to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes in south-east Morocco. The dunes are high, accessible and close to villages and oases that add learning value.
Getting there
From Marrakech the drive is roughly 9–10 hours, usually split over two days via the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades valley. From Fes it's about 7–8 hours through the Middle Atlas. Driving times are estimates and depend on stops and road conditions.
The desert camp
Groups usually sleep in tents at an established camp in the dunes, with shared meals, music around the fire and toilets either shared or in-tent depending on the camp level chosen.
Camel or 4x4
Groups often reach the camp by camel at sunset — a ride of around an hour — and return at sunrise. Anyone who prefers not to ride can go by 4x4.
Weather
Days can be hot and nights surprisingly cold, especially from November to March. June to August is very hot and less suitable for student groups.
What to pack for the desert night
- Warm layer or fleece for the evening
- Headtorch
- Scarf for sun and wind-blown sand
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- Small overnight bag (main luggage often stays in the vehicle)
- Refillable water bottle
Learning opportunities
Dune formation, desert climate, oasis water systems, fossils of the Tafilalet and Gnawa music in Khamlia all make the desert more than a photo stop.
